What are the laws in Massachusetts about cannabis?

In 2024, THC and CBD beverages are now only available at licensed dispensaries, so you won’t find them in grocery or liquor stores. We’ll also cover recent changes in possession limits and home cultivation rules in Massachusetts to help you stay compliant with state regulations.

THC Beverages Can Only Be Sold in Dispensaries

As of 2024, THC and CBD infused beverages can only be sold in licensed dispensaries. This means that you’ll no longer be able to pick up a THC seltzer when you grab beer or wine at a grocery store, gas station, or liquor store. At Eskar, we carry a wide range of THC and CBD beverages to meet your needs.

Possession Limit Changes

While both recreational and medicinal marijuana are legal in the state of Massachusetts, it’s important to stay up-to-date on possession limits so that you’re in compliance with state laws. If you’re out and about in public, you’re allowed to carry up to an ounce of cannabis flower. At home, you can keep up to 10 ounces of flower safely stored. You can also have up to 5 grams of concentrate at home.

If you’re growing your own weed at home, it’s also important to understand how many plants you’re allowed to have at one time. You can have or transport up to six weed plants, but three of them must be seedlings. While you can grow up to 10 plants at your residence, they need to be grown out of public view.

Important Compliance Points

In addition to the above information, there are a few other long-standing laws that are important to keep in mind as you enjoy cannabis in Massachusetts:

  • You need to be at least 21 years old to purchase, consume, or transport cannabis.
  • Cannabis must be transported in a sealed or locked container.
  • Even though cannabis is legal in many of the states around Massachusetts, it’s still against the law to carry marijuana across state lines. Since weed has yet to be legalized on a federal level, you’ll need to keep your cannabis products within the borders of the purchase state (even if the state you want to transport weed to has also legalized recreational and medicinal marijuana).
